Name a Minke Whale

---------------------------------------------------

Our minke whale studies began in August 2000 as a pilot study funded by the British Ecological Society and the Marine Mammal Conservation Trust. Many of the minke whales identified by the research team have characteristic markings and fin shapes and have been sighted in the coastal waters of the outer Moray Firth over several years now [see minke whale studies for details of our research work with these animals]. Minkes are quite common in this area of the Moray Firth. They are extremely curious and often circle our research boat - as curious about us as we are about them!

Ironically, Norwegian whaling for minkes still continues in the North Sea - the annual quota for 2008 being set at more than 1,000 whales! To date, however, the impact on North Sea minke whale populations has been given very little attention - making our work in this area all the more important! Naming a Scottish minke whale will help us to carry out our vital conservation work with these whales.

Naming a whale highlights the presence of these little leviathans in our waters and is a great way to focus more attention on them. The CRRU 'Name a Minke Whale' scheme entitles you to:

  • exclusively name a minke whale (for yourself, a friend or relative, or a loved one)
for the period of its lifetime (40 to 50 years)
  • an 8 x 6½" mounted print of a minke whale
  • a naming certificate, including a picture of your whale
  • one year's complimentary membership of the CRRU
  • access to CRRU_News, an exclusive E-forum for CRRU supporters.
