| Stranded whales & dolphins ...how can you help? |
| If you find a LIVE stranded or injured whale or dolphin
on the beach you must send for help QUICKLY. A whale or dolphin stranding
is an emergency and the speed of response by a professional rescue team is perhaps
the most crucial factor in determining whether or not an animal can be returned
to the sea. Telephone for help as soon as possible, making sure the caller can give an accurate location and description of the animal. If in Scotland, please telephone the CRRU on 01261 851696 or BDMLR on 01825 765 546. Alternatively, you can contact your nearest Police station or local SSPCA (Scotland) / RSPCA (England & Wales) office with details - they should know what to do. If you find a DEAD whale or dolphin, however, (in any condition) secure the carcass if possible above the high water mark; make exact notes on its location with reference to maps or local features; and contact the appropriate local authorities with details: In England or Wales, telephone The Natural History Museum on 0207 942 5155. In Northern Ireland contact 08 0232 381251. For the Republic of Ireland telephone 021 276871.
