Formed in 1997, the Cetacean Research & Rescue Unit (CRRU) is a small, non-profit research organisation based in NE Scotland. Located in the beautiful heritage fishing village of Gardenstown (right), near Banff, on the southern coastline of the outer Moray Firth, the group is dedicated to the conservation and protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises in Scottish waters through scientific investigation, environmental education, and the provision of professional, veterinary assistance to sick, stranded and injured individuals.

Members of the UK Marine Animal Rescue Coalition (MARC) and providing specialist training in marine mammal rescue for an elite team of professionals, the CRRU also operates the only full-time whale and dolphin emergency rescue operation in Scotland. Cetaceans are numerous in this area of the North Sea and strandings can be frequent. Liaising with the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), Scottish SPCA, HM Coastguard, and other local and national animal welfare organisations, all staff and members of the CRRU (scientists, veterinarians and volunteers) are qualified and/or experienced to act and advise at the scene of a live stranding with first aid, professional veterinary treatment, refloatation and rescue procedures as required.

The research and rescue activities of the CRRU would not be able continue if it were not for the support and
encouragement given by our Supporters. Please pay them a visit.
